Georgia says 30 people have contracted anthrax this year and that authorities have stepped up safety measures.
Georgia's Center for Infectious Diseases said Friday that by year's end the ex-Soviet nation is expected to roughly match last year's total of 59 cases. That would represent a marked increase from the 28 anthrax cases the Caucasus Mountains country had in 2010.
Most of the cases this year have been registered in eastern Georgia near the border with Azerbaijan.
Naira Gogebashvili, a leading expert of a Tbilisi clinic treating infectious diseases, said some of the patients contracted anthrax due to violations of safety procedures regarding the burial of sick animals in specially designated areas.
