LONDON – Scotland Yard says it has arrested an Italian fugitive across the street from the police force's London headquarters.
Police said that the 49-year-old Gianfranco Techegne was waiting in line at the Broadway Post Office Tuesday when he was arrested by detectives from Scotland Yard's extradition unit -- based in a building about 30 feet away.
Scotland Yard said that Techegne had been wanted by Italian since 1982 in connection with the armed robbery of a car rental agency in Naples in which a police officer was shot dead.
The arrest, although conveniently located, wasn't a coincidence. Italian authorities requested his extradition last month and police said Friday that they were "acting on intelligence."
Scotland Yard said Techegne remains in custody.
