A dog mauled five London police officers during a raid to arrest a man Thursday, officials said. Four of the officers sustained serious injuries.

A police firearms unit later arrived at the scene in east London and fatally shot the "pitbull-type dog." Two of the injured officers were discharged from a hospital late Thursday, police said. The other three remained in stable condition and would spend the night.

A 25-year-old man was arrested in the operation on the initial matter he was sought for. He remains in custody at a London police station, authorities said.

The dog that mauled the officers possibly attacked a passer-by in an incident last year. Police said they had failed to pick up on intelligence that the animal lived at the property before officers stormed the address.
