LASHKAR GAH, Afghanistan -- The six British soldiers killed in the single deadliest attack on UK troops since 2006 were named by the Ministry of Defence (MOD) on Thursday, Sky News reports.
The soldier from 1st Battalion The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment was named as 33-year-old Sergeant Nigel Coupe.
The five soldiers from 3rd Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment were revealed to be Corporal Jake Hartley, 20; Private Anthony Frampton, 20; Private Christopher Kershaw, 20; Private Daniel Wade, 20; and Private Daniel Wilford, 21.
"It is with great sadness that the Ministry of Defence must confirm the names of the six service personnel missing, believed killed, in Afghanistan since Tuesday March 6, 2012," the MOD said in a statement.
They were killed while traveling in a Warrior armored vehicle that was hit by an explosion on the border of Helmand and Kandahar provinces, near Lashkar Gar.
Their families have already been informed.
The release of the fallen soldiers' names came as Britain's chief of defence staff, General Sir David Richards, said Britain would "hold its nerve."
Combat operations in the region will be maintained until the end of 2014 as planned, he said.
Flowers and cards have been left outside the entrance of the Battlesbury Barracks in Warminster, southwestern England, where the 3rd Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment was based.
There have been 404 British fatalities in Afghanistan since the start of operations in 2001.
