DUBLIN (AP) -- A Northern Ireland judge has convicted an IRA dissident of the 2009 murders of two British soldiers -- the first such killings in more than a decade -- but acquitted a second suspect.
The judge ruled Friday that 46-year-old Brian Shivers shot off-duty, unarmed soldiers collecting pizzas outside an army base. He said DNA evidence linking 44-year-old Colin Duffy to the attackers' getaway car was inadequate.
The victims, 21-year-old Patrick Azimkar and 23-year-old Mark Quinsey, were shot repeatedly at close range. They were about to be deployed to Afghanistan.
Forensics specialists testified they found DNA traces of both Duffy and Shivers in the car. Justice Anthony Hart said he couldn't convict Duffy on that basis alone, but more evidence linked Shivers to the attack.
