LUBIZDE, Kosovo -- An aunt of Kosovo-born Sami Osmakac says she is shocked by news that the 25-year-old is accused of plotting an Islamist-inspired attack in the United States.
Time Osmankaj on Tuesday described the naturalized U.S. citizen as "a quiet and fun" person. She told The Associated Press that Sami, who is of ethnic Albanian origin, came from a "very good family."
U.S. federal authorities have charged him with plotting to attack Tampa-area nightclubs and a sheriff's office with bombs and an assault rifle to avenge wrongs done to Muslims. U.S. officials are using a different spelling for his last name than what his family uses here.
The Osmankaj family compound is in a remote area in Kosovo's southwest. His aunt says Sami Osmankaj was last in Kosovo in October 2011.
