Milan Court Throws Out Berlusconi Tax Fraud Case

MILAN -- A Milan court has refused to indict Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi in a tax fraud case involving his Mediaset company.

Berlusconi's defense lawyer Niccolo Ghedini praised the decision, adding: "Berlusconi had nothing to do with it."

The so-called Mediatrade case alleges fraud in the sale of film rights by Mediaset. Berlusconi has always denied wrongdoing.

The court, however, indicted Berlusconi's eldest son, Pier Silvio Berlusconi, Mediaset chairman Fedele Confalonieri and nine other defendants. Trial is set for Dec. 22.

The decision by magistrate Maria Vicidomini lightens the premier's legal burden. Berlusconi faces three active trials in Milan, including another for tax fraud and a trial for allegedly paying for sex with an underage Moroccan girl.
