Jordan's prime minister has told his Syrian counterpart to end the bloody crackdown on anti-government protesters immediately.

The remarks by Prime Minister Marouf al-Bakhit are the first official Jordanian condemnation of Syrian President Bashar Assad's brutal response to the five-month-old uprising against his regime

Jordan's state-run Petra news agency says al-Bakhit told Syrian Prime Minister Adel Safar to "quickly end" military operations. Petra said the two spoke by telephone Monday.

Al-Bakhit urged Syria to implement political reforms, saying Jordan is waiting for "urgent, concrete action."

Last week, Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh called the escalating violence "disturbing," but said Amman does not interfere in Syria's internal affairs.
