LONDON – Scotland Yard's mounted police branch is putting its ceremonial division, known as the Grey Escort, through its paces as officers prepare for the royal wedding.
The London police force says 11 horses from its 110-strong cavalry arm are being prepared to serve as part of the escort, which will guard the royal carriage procession for Prince William and Kate Middleton after the marriage ceremony at Westminster Abbey on Friday.
Only nine of the horses will serve on the day itself, each mounted by an inspector, a sergeant or one of six constables.
The force said in a statement Tuesday that the horses would be chosen for their "good and calm temperament."
Scotland Yard's Mounted Branch has led such processions for many years, including for Princess Diana's wedding.
