MANAGUA, Nicaragua – At least four Nicaraguan police officers have been injured in clashes with demonstrators protesting President Daniel Ortega's bid to win re-election.
Protesters threw stones after police blocked their march through the capital of Managua on Saturday.
About 1,000 demonstrators turned out to oppose the president's decision to enter the Nov. 5 election. Ortega's supporters were bused in for a competing demonstration that was much larger.
Ortega is running based on a 2009 ruling from a Nicaraguan Supreme Court commission made up of his supporters that overturned the constitution's ban on consecutive re-election.
Ortega first served as president from 1979 to 1985 and returned to the office in 2006.
