NAIROBI, Kenya – The European Union anti-piracy force says that a Mozambican-flagged fishing vessel has been hijacked by suspected Somali pirates.
The EU force said in a statement Saturday that it was not clear when the FV Vega 5 was hijacked but it was spotted on Friday near the Mozambique coast, approximately 200 nautical miles southwest of the Comoros islands.
The Vega 5 was seen towing what looked to be a pirate attack skiff and did not respond to any calls, the force said. There are 14 crew members on the FV Vega 5 but their nationalities are unknown.
Piracy is thriving off the coast of Somalia because of the multimillion ransoms the pirates earn. They are able to operate because Somalia has not had an effective government for 19 years.
