VIENNA – Relatives commemorating the 10th anniversary of a car cable fire that killed 155 people in Austria have slammed the justice system's handling of the disaster.
The Nov. 11, 2000, inferno in a tunnel leading to the summit of the Kitzsteinhorn glacier was blamed on a faulty heater. Most of the victims were from Austria and Germany. Eight were Americans, and the others were from Japan, Slovenia, the Netherlands and Britain.
The Austria Press Agency reports that relatives speaking at Thursday's commemoration in the rain-soaked ski resort of Kaprun criticized court proceedings that led to the acquittal of 16 people charged with criminal negligence.
Chancellor Werner Faymann, meanwhile, said neither a court nor money could undo what had happened or erase the pain it caused.
