Slovakia observes day of mourning after shooting spree that left 8 dead

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia (AP) — Slovakia is observing a national day of mourning after a deadly shooting rampage left eight people dead and wounded 15 others.

Flags are flying at half-mast, and public broadcasters have canceled some of their entertainment programs as the shocked nation remembers the seven people — including a 12-year-old boy — slain by a gunman Monday.

The killings occurred in a dilapidated neighborhood of Bratislava, the Slovak capital. The gunman, identified as 48-year-old Lubomir Harman, committed suicide as police reached the scene. His motives remain unclear.

Nine people were still hospitalized Thursday, including a a 33-year-old Czech citizen who was in critical condition.
