Thieves Tunnel Into Paris Bank to Steal Safe Deposit Boxes

Bandits tunneled into a Parisian bank vault and emptied almost 200 private safe deposit boxes at the weekend, French media reported Tuesday.

On Saturday night, robbers broke into the Credit Lyonnais branch on Paris' Avenue de l'Opera, digging through a labyrinth of cellars to reach the bank’s vault. They then spent several hours cracking open the safes and torched the bank before leaving, police said.

French media reported that the robbery was reminiscent of the "Spaggiari Affair," a heist masterminded 30 years ago by French criminal Albert Spaggiari.

His gang tunneled into the vault of a Societe Generale branch in Nice. They spent two days inside before they made off with almost $32.42 million worth of loot.
