Rebels blamed for Central African Republic deaths

A feared rebel group blamed for hundreds of deaths in Congo is being accused of stepping up attacks against civilians in Central African Republic too.

An official says rebels from the Lord's Resistance Army killed 10 civilians in attacks overnight Monday in the country's east.

Remy Semdouto, an official in Mbomou, said Tuesday civilians in the region had to defend themselves. Some 50 people were kidnapped, and one rebel was killed by the villagers.

The Lord's Resistance Army is considered one of Africa's most brutal rebel armies, and its leaders are the subject of an International Criminal Court arrest warrant.

Earlier this week, Human Rights Watch blamed the LRA for hundreds of deaths in Congo. The rebels denied the allegations.
