Helio Castroneves has won his third Indianapolis 500, beating 2005 winner Dan Wheldon by 1.981 seconds. Danica Patrick was third, the best finish by a woman at Indianapolis.
Castroneves, who started from the pole, had a half-second lead over teammate Ryan Briscoe before a hard crash by Vitor Meira and rookie Raphael Matos brought out the yellow caution with 26 laps to go in Sunday's race. But Briscoe had to come in for fuel, moving Wheldon up to second and Patrick third.
The green came out after 183 of the 200 laps, and Castroneves began pulling away for good.
His lead was 1.38 seconds with 10 laps to go, and he continued widening the gap the rest of the way.
Townsend Bell was fourth and Will Power fifth. Last year's winner, Scott Dixon, finished sixth.

Castroneves shot past Dixon on a restart after 140 of the 200 laps, and Power moved ahead of Dixon into second after 157 laps. After 160 laps, Castroneves' lead over Power was 0.190 seconds. Castroneves won the race in 2001 and 2002.
Dixon had a narrow lead over teammate Dario Franchitti after 300 miles, but Franchitti lost time in the pits when his fuel hose got stuck. That dropped Franchitti to eighth and moved Castroneves up to second behind Dixon. Castroneves then took the lead when the green came out.
Wheldon was running fourth, followed by Bell and Patrick.

Danica Patrick was running 10th.
AT 200 MILES

Franchitti, the 2007 winner, led 46 of the first 53 laps before Briscoe passed him for the lead.
After a crash knocked out Graham Rahal, all the leaders made a second round of pit stops. When the green came out again, Briscoe appeared to have tire problems and quickly fell to the back of the pack.
Kanaan then moved up to third, followed by Matos and Patrick. Castroneves was running sixth after 80 of the 200 laps. Briscoe was 24th, two laps back.

Franchitti started third but rocketed past Castroneves on a restart following a first-lap crash involving Marco Andretti and Mario Moraes.
Neither driver was hurt in the crash, and Castroneves stayed in the lead under the yellow caution. When the green came out starting the seventh lap, Franchitti pulled in front. He built his lead to seven-tenths of a second after 21 laps before a second crash knocked out Ryan Hunter-Reay, last year's rookie of the year.
Franchitti kept his lead through the first round of pit stops under the yellow, but Briscoe came out ahead of Castroneves and moved into second. The green came out again starting lap 28, and Franchitti maintained his lead over Briscoe and Dixon, who also passed Castroneves.
