GR8 news! NY's MTA launching text alert system

Tuesday, November 25, 2008

NEW YORK —  R U ready 4 this?

New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority is launching a new text messaging and e-mail alert program Tuesday to keep riders informed about service changes.

The push for the program was heightened by an August 2007 storm. It shut down much of the subway system _ and portions of the Metro-North Railroad and Long Island Rail Road commuter lines _ and left riders clamoring for information.

Other agencies also use texting and e-mail alert systems. State officials have launched a traffic alert system that provides real-time information about delays on New York's highways.
