MILAN, Italy Roberto Mancini will stay on as Inter Milan coach despite his announcement that he would quit at the end of the season, the club's president said.
Inter president Massimo Moratti said Wednesday he had spoken with Mancini and the coach had confirmed he would stick with the northern Italian team, the ANSA news agency reported.
"He reiterated that he wants to stay at Inter next year and for all the duration of his contract and that next season he wants to win the Champions League," Moratti was quoted as saying by ANSA.
Phones at the club were not answered Wednesday evening.
Mancini unexpectedly said Tuesday he would resign at the end of the season _ making the announcement immediately following a 1-0 home defeat to Liverpool that eliminated Inter from the European Champions League and sent the Reds to the quarterfinals.
"The next two and a half months will be my last as the manager of the team," Mancini said during a post-match news conference. "This is a decision that I had already taken and has nothing to do with the defeat to Liverpool."
Inter has a six-point lead in Italy's Serie A with 11 games left to play in a season that ends in May. With Mancini at the helm, Inter has won the last two Italian league titles.
