375 US Deaths in Afghanistan, Elsewhere

As of Monday, Oct. 1, 2007, at least 375 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Uzbekistan as a result of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, according to the Defense Department. The department last updated its figures Sept. 22, 2007.

Of those, the military reports 249 were killed by hostile action.

Outside the Afghan region, the Defense Department reports 62 more members of the U.S. military died in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Of those, two were the result of hostile action. The military lists these other locations as Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, Cuba; Djibouti; Eritrea; Jordan; Kenya; Kyrgyzstan; Philippines; Seychelles; Sudan; Tajikistan; Turkey; and Yemen.

There were also four CIA officer deaths and one military civilian death.

_ Army Spc. Ciara M. Durkin, 30, Quincy, Mass.; died Friday at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, of injuries suffered from a non-combat incident; was assigned to the 726th Finance Battalion, Massachusetts Army National Guard, West Newton, Mass.

_ Army Sgt. Zachary D. Tellier, 31, Charlotte, N.C.; died Saturday at Firebase Wilderness, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered from small arms fire; was assigned to the 4th Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.
