EAST HAMPTON, N.Y. A softball team of artists including supermodel Christie Brinkley beat a team of writers 13-5 in a charity game.
The artists, including "Footloose" star Lori Singer, scored four runs in the first inning of the annual Artists and Writers Charity Softball Game on Saturday.
Brinkley, a guest hitter, catwalked to the batter's box in the top of the third and slapped a ball to centerfield. She ran to first base screaming and flailing her arms but was thrown out.
"I'm using my recent back surgery as my excuse for my performance," she said.
In the bottom of the third inning for the writers, Daily News columnist Mike Lupica tried sliding into first base.
"I'm safe, right?" he asked the umpire.
He was out _ and he was in for a lot of heckling from some of the 1,500 spectators at Herrick Park.
The writers scored a couple of runs in the ninth inning, but the artists stamped out their rally.
The game raised $75,000 for a hospice for the terminally ill, a day care center and a drug and alcohol treatment program.
