GREENBELT, Md. A standoff between police and two people in a stolen car shut down the Capital Beltway on Thursday, stranding motorists in the Washington area for more than an hour at the height of the morning rush.
A Maryland state trooper spotted the car stopped on the shoulder of the highway that rings the nation's capital about 8 a.m., said Sgt. Russell Newell, a state police spokesman.
The car's two occupants refused to get out, prompting police to block the highway in both directions for fear the pair was armed, Newell said. About an hour later, television news cameras showed the two being dragged from the car and taken into custody.
The standoff backed up traffic for miles on the Beltway and nearby roads. Traffic began moving again about 9 a.m.
