Kate has weakened to a tropical storm in the Atlantic far out to sea south of Newfoundland.

The one-time hurricane's winds had dropped by late Wednesday to 70 mph.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Kate was centered about 455 miles south of Cape Race, Newfoundland, and was speeding northeast at 41 mph.

The Center says there are no coastal watches or warnings in effect, and Kate should weaken to a post-tropical storm on Thursday.
