Breaking News: Indonesian Plane Missing Over Papua Region

An aircraft with 54 people onboard is currently missing.

According to the BBC, contact with Trigana Air ATR-42 turboprop was lost just before 3 p.m. local time (2 a.m. EDT).

The passenger count included 44 adults, five children, and five crew members at take off.

The air craft took off from Sentani airport in the nation's capital of Jayapura and was en route to the town of Oksibil, which is located south of the capital.

The plane left Sentani airport at 14:21 local time and contact was lost a 14:55.

AccuWeather meteorologist Adam Douty stated "There have been isolated showers and thunderstorms across Papua over the past day. Most have been from central parts of the country on north."

It is unclear at this time if weather played a part in the disappearance of the aircraft.

Transport Ministry JA Barata spokesman stated "We are not sure what happened to the plane yet and we are co-ordinating with local authorities," according to AFP news.
