Shark Bites Swimmer in North Carolina Wednesday in Seventh Attack Since June

A shark attack was reported on Wednesday on Ocracoke Island, North Carolina, marking the state's seventh attack this year.

Shortly after noon, a swimmer sustained multiple bites at a lifeguard beach in the Cape Hatteras National Seashore area, Hyde County officials confirmed.

The individual, later identified as a male in his late 60s, was flown off the island for treatment at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, North Carolina.

This attack marks as the state's seventh attack this year. A 17-year-old male sustained a shark bite on Saturday, June 27, near Waves, North Carolina. On Friday, June 26, a 47-year-old man was injured swimming 1 mile north of the Avon Fishing Pier in Avon, North Carolina.

Wednesday's attack is the third to be reported in the Outer Banks area this year. Before the recent string of attacks, Cape Hatteras Seashore had not reported a shark attack since 2011.
