With snowfall totaling between 3 and 6 feet and plunging temperatures, thousands have been left snowed in across upstate New York.
Local officials confirmed at least 13 deaths related to the snowstorm as of Friday morning. Several were due to cardiac arrest while attempting to shovel heavy snow.
The New York Thruway was impossible to traverse as snowplows were unable to keep up with the 3- to 5-inch per hour snowfall rates Tuesday. To make matters worse, gusty winds accompanied the heavy snow, causing blowing, drifting and white-out conditions at times.
