BREAKING: Magnitude-6.2 Earthquake Strikes Iran

More than 50 people have been injured as villages were destroyed on Monday in Iran near its border with Iraq.

The quake occurred at 7:02 a.m., local time, Monday, with an epicenter 4 km (2.5 miles) from Murmuri, in the Ilam province, according to the Iranian Seismological Center at the University of Tehran.

Governor of Abdanan Majid Asgari told Tehran-based Press TV that the temblor caused severe damage in the region.

It should be dry in the area for the next several days to aid with relief efforts, AccuWeather.com Meteorologist Adam Douty said.

"There will be rain and thunderstorms in the mountains just to the east of Murmuri," he said.

Many regional residents had been sleeping outside their homes because of previous earthquakes in the area, The Associated Press reported.

Forty-eight earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 and higher have been reported in the region over a 21-hour period, with the magnitude-6.2 quake being the strongest, according to the Iranian Seismological Center.
