VIDEO: Rain-Induced Illinois Sinkhole Swallows Car With Mom, Son Inside

Following rounds of flooding downpours across the Midwest earlier this week, a sinkhole opened up on a street in Kane County, Illinois, Tuesday morning.

According to Kane County Sheriff Lt. Pat Gengler, a woman from Elgin was driving her son when they fell into the sinkhole. They were discovered when a pickup truck drove over the car. Meteorologist Heather Waldman has more details in the video below on how these events unfolded.

Police said that the car was so far into the sinkhole that it was unable to be seen from the road.

Sinkholes are likely to form in soluble rock following heavy rains. Severe weather earlier in the week brought giant hail, flash floods and several inches of rain in under 24 hours from Texas to Michigan.
