Patrons expecting to grab a famous Katz's Deli sandwich were in for a shock as a massive sinkhole opened up on Houston Street in front of the famed New York City eatery Thursday morning.
As seen in the video and images below, water flooded the street and caused disruption in vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
Sinkholes can occur anywhere that soluble rock is present underground. As water and rock dissolves, caverns form underground until they are too big and collapse. In urban areas, infrastructures such as eroding sewage and water main pipes can contribute to sinkhole activity.
