Passengers are stranded on a ship in the Southern Ocean after thick ice trapped the ship Tuesday afternoon.
CNN reported that help was still two days away on Christmas. Icebreaker ships are expected to help the currently immobile cruise vessel break out of the ice.
Despite being summer in the Southern Hemisphere, much of the Southern Ocean remains flooded with ice.
A storm system will be moving through the Southern Ocean, between the icebreakers and the trapped ship, bringing some rain showers for the journey Thursday and Friday.
The ship was on its way to French base Dumont D'Urville in Antarctica, said Time. Explorers and tourists were making the trip in remembrance of the Douglas Mawson Antarctic exploration that took place 100 years ago.
