Storm to Bring Mix to St. Louis, Freezing Drizzle Farther South

Another winter storm is on the way for the mid-Mississippi Valley, but areas hit hard by the recent ice storm will be spared the worst.

However, spotty freezing drizzle is forecast in portions of Arkansas, Kansas and Oklahoma early Friday morning and midday. As a result areas of black ice are possible.

Farther north and northeast, it will be a different story with more substantial ice and snow in the offing.

There will be a period of snow or wintry mix later in the day Friday and Friday night in St. Louis and Springfield, Mo., along with southern Illinois.

With temperatures hovering around freezing, some roads may become slippery across Missouri, mostly from snow or sleet.

"Unlike the last storm, there will be very little freezing rain with this system," said AccuWeather.com Expert Senior Meteorologist Heather Zehr. "The lack of freezing rain should eliminate the threat for tree and power line damage, which caused so many problems last week."

This means that areas that were impacted by the significant ice storm last week, including places like Dallas and Little Rock, will be spared from having another round of heavy ice. This time around, most of what falls will be in the form of rain.

With heavy precipitation likely holding off until Friday afternoon across the Arklatex, temperatures will have time to rise above freezing, preventing a significant buildup of ice.

Another factor working against a prolong ice storm in prior hard-hit areas will be the southerly flow that will bring up warmer air from the Gulf of Mexico. Dallas will likely get into the 50s on Friday, which will be the first time that has happened since Dec. 4.

Most of the rain and mixed precipitation will push east of the Mississippi River by Saturday morning as the storm system pulls away, giving way to a mostly dry weekend.

This storm system will track northeastward into the mid-Atlantic over the weekend, which will spread the threat for snow and ice into the Northeast by Saturday.
