In memory of the lives lost in the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks on the United States, people from across the country will gather at local and national memorials on the 12th anniversary.

Memorials will take place in New York City, close to the former site of the World Trade Centers, in Arlington, Va., at the Pentagon Memorial, and in Shanksville, Pa., at the crash site of the third airplane.

The mercury will soar on Wednesday in New York City, where thousands will gather to view the 9/11 museum and national memorial. The afternoon will yield temperatures in the low to mid-90s with high humidity and a RealFeel temperature of 100 F.

Attendees should dress for the sweltering heat and hydrate throughout the day.

Those arriving via subway should prepare for extreme temperatures underground. Most New York City subway stations do not have air conditioning and can become significantly hotter than outdoor forecast temperatures.

Late in the day and into the evening, a thunderstorm is possible within the city but will likely pass in time for crowds to view the nighttime Tribute in Light memorial.

In Arlington, Va., the Pentagon Memorial is hosting a special service for survivors and families of victims. The afternoon will be hot and humid for attendees with the possibility of a stray afternoon thunderstorm.

The high temperature will push to 93 degrees in the afternoon with a RealFeel temperature of 100 F.

In Shanksville, Pa., the gates of the memorial will open at 7:00 a.m.

An open air service will commence at 9:45 a.m. including a reading of the names of the Flight 93 passengers and crew, ringing of the bells of remembrance a wreathing laying and brief remarks.

A high of 84 is predicted in the afternoon with a RealFeel temperature of 92 degrees.

A shower or thunderstorm may arrive late in the day. As the memorial is outdoors, attendees may want to pack an umbrella or raincoat. If at any time, thunder can be heard, seek shelter indoors or within a vehicle. If thunder is audible, the lightning is close enough to strike.
