A UPS cargo plane has crashed near Birmingham, Ala., according to the Associated Press.
Local news source Alabama 13 reported the plane went down in an open field owned by the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth airport near 19th Avenue North and North East Lake Boulevard.
The crash occurred at 4:45 a.m. according to Birmingham Meteorologist for ABC 33/40 James Spann.
While the cause of the incident is still under investigation, there were thick, low clouds around 1,000 feet above the surface at the time of the crash. Winds were light at 3 mph.
Light rain will move into the area over the next couple of hours as cleanup begins. A shower or thunderstorm may also be around during the afternoon hours.
