Devastating Earthquake Rattles Indonesia

A devastating earthquake resulted in fatalities and dozens of injuries across portions of Indonesia on Tuesday.

The 6.1 Magnitude earthquake occurred at 2:37 p.m. local time (3:37 a.m. EDT) 34 miles (55km) south of Bireun, Indonesia, in the Aceh Province, according to the United States Geological Survey.

Early reports stemming from local disaster agencies indicated five confirmed deaths along with dozens of injuries as the quake destroyed houses and triggered a series of landslides and blackouts across the region.

Indonesia is prone to earthquakes as it sits on the so-called "Ring of Fire," an area in the Pacific Ocean where a series of continental plates meet, causing extensive seismic and volcanic activity.

The Aceh Province in particular has a dubious history of spawning debilitating earthquakes. In 2004, a quake just off of the coast of the Aceh Province created a tsunami that killed 230,000 people across Asia.
