Tornadoes, Strong Winds Reported Throughout Iowa

A wind gust of 70 mph was recorded in Davenport around 3:40 p.m. CDT as a system of severe weather pushes across the state. The National Weather Service lists five possible tornadoes that have touched down this afternoon. Confirmation of tornadoes will likely take time for surveying damage.

Three of the potential tornadoes were in Cedar County; one reportedly formed around 4:05 p.m. CDT outside of Mechanicsville. Five minutes later another was reported west of Stanwood. The next came at 4:23 p.m. CDT, listed as 4 miles north of Stanwood. A possible tornado north of Muscatine overturned a semi-truck Route 61. Earlier in the afternoon around 2:50 p.m. CDT a tornado was reported in Johnson County.

According to a trained spotter, .75 of an inch of rain has accumulated this afternoon just outside of Cedar Rapids. The storm continues to move east and should leave the area this evening.
