Birmingham will remain at risk for torrential downpours through Thursday, worsening existing flooding problems throughout the city.
As of 8:30 p.m. EDT Wednesday, the city had received nearly 3.5 inches of rain. Flash flooding was occurring Wednesday in the late afternoon hours, with water rescues underway in the city and surrounding areas.
Though the rainfall rate had decreased to nearly 0.25 inches per hour by the evening Wednesday, any additional rainfall will aggravate existing flooding and drainage problems.
Thunderstorms are forecast to persist through Thursday evening.
