Major Earthquake Strikes Southern Iran

A powerful, shallow earthquake has rocked southern Iran on Tuesday.

There were no immediate reports of injury or damage.

The quake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.3, with an epicenter about 55 miles (89 km) southeast of Bandar Bushehr, the USGS Earthquake Hazards website said. The focal depth was only 6 miles (10 km).

Estimated maximum shaking was Mercalli intensity VIII, which is defined as "severe," having "moderate" to "heavy" damage potential, the USGS website showed.

A magnitude 5.4 aftershock followed within about 13 minutes.
