Ellis Island museum re-opening 'not likely' in 2013 because of damage from Superstorm Sandy

The National Park Service says the Ellis Island Immigration Museum "will not likely be open in 2013" as damage from Superstorm Sandy is repaired.

The island, adjacent to the one that is home to the Statue of Liberty, sustained severe damage to its infrastructure in the Oct. 29 storm.

The park service made the announcement Friday, as it said that security screening for visitors to the Statue of Liberty would be moving to temporary facilities on Ellis Island.

The storm bought water levels as high as 8 feet to the islands, destroying boilers and electrical systems.

The collection of artifacts at the Ellis Island museum was unharmed, but had to be moved because it wasn't possible to maintain the climate-controlled environment necessary for preservation.
