Mid-March storm sending final blow of winter season to snow-weary New England residents

A late winter storm promises to snarl the morning commute and even add a few more snow days to school calendars across New England.

Snow is expected to cover newly bare patches of ground and force people to gas up their snow blowers again Tuesday — just a day before spring officially arrives on Wednesday.

The forecasts call for as much as 20 inches of snow in parts of northern New England, with lesser amounts mixed with sleet farther south. Boston and Providence, R.I., could each get 4-8 inches, and Hartford, Conn., 4-8 inches of snow and sleet.

Boston has cancelled classes and other districts are doing the same.

But some are welcoming the forecast since the coming storm could extend the ski season.
