Hundreds of Thousands Left Without Power Following Blizzard

The nor'easter that dropped feet of snow on the New England states over the last two days, has left more 900,000 people without electricity.

Utility customers from northern Pennsylvania to the Canadian border in the northeast are trying to stay warm and using alternative methods to light their homes after several inches to a few feet of snow knocked out the power.

Dominion power sent crews from North Carolina and Virginia into New Jersey early Friday morning to offer assistance as the power restoration efforts started. According to the company Facebook page, the crews were headed back home Saturday as the local companies are making good progress on the outages and their help was not needed.

Below is a list of power outages for each of the New England States and New York. All totals were current as of late Saturday afternoon.

Rhode Island

The National Grid power company website showed a total of 177,835. The company could not be reached for comment.

Block Island Power Company had about 105 customers without service according to Brent Battey, Block Island Power Company engine monitor. Battey said, "It wasn't all that bad. We will have to quit after dark, but we expect to have all the power restored by tomorrow."


Connecticut Power and Light still had 38,111 customers without service, according to their website.

The website for the NSTAR Electric and Gas company had a total of 251,055 customers without power. A recorded message for the company stated that they expect restoration to take multiple days due to the blizzard conditions.


National Grid for Massachusetts reported a total of 178,829 customers without electric service. The company could not be reached for comment.

According to the NSTAR website, there were 246,466 utility customers with no power as of Saturday afternoon.


Power interruptions in Vermont were minimal. As of Saturday afternoon, less than ten electricity customers were without power according to company websites. These outages may not be directly related to the blizzard.


About 350 of Central Maine Power's customers did not have electricity Saturday.

The Bangor Hydro Electric Company website listed a total of 272 electricity customers without power.

New York

Long Island, New York has the most power outages. The Long Island Power Authority website total of customers without power was 8,602.

An online check of seven of the largest suppliers throughout New York yielded a total of 1,500 other families who were without power.
