Thousands lose power as severe storms rock New Jersey

Thousands of utility customers in central New Jersey lost power when severe thunderstorms moved through the region.

Forecasters say the storms, which contained heavy rains and lightning, hit Monmouth and Ocean counties early Saturday afternoon. Lakewood appeared to be the hardest hit municipality, along with Toms River and Brick Townships.

About 14,000 customers overall lost power during the storms.

Jersey Central Power and Light said roughly 2,000 customers were still without electricity as of 3:30 p.m., though all customers were expected to have their service restored by Saturday night at the latest.
