Tropical Storm Philippe Forms in East Atlantic

Weather forecasters say Tropical Storm Philippe has formed over the far eastern Atlantic, about 550 miles southwest of the Cape Verde Islands.

At 5 p.m. EST, the National Weather Service said Philippe had maximum sustained winds of 40 mph and was moving west-northwest at 14 mph. It was expected to continue in that direction through Sunday, then gradually turn toward the northwest and slow its forward speed.

The tropical storm-force winds extended outward up to 45 mph. There were no coastal watches or warnings in effect, according to the weather service.
