PAXTON, Neb. -- A spring blizzard has stranded several dozen vehicles on highways in western Nebraska.
Keith County dispatcher Neil Johnson said Friday morning that many vehicles are stuck on Interstate 80 between Ogallala and Paxton and that other motorists are stranded on Nebraska highways 2 and 92. He's gotten no reports of any medical emergencies or major accidents.
A Nebraska State Patrol dispatcher says the interstate has been closed from Sidney in Nebraska's Panhandle east to North Platte. That's about 120 miles.
National Weather Service meteorologist John Springer says winds gusting to 45 mph were whipping around snow that began falling Thursday in far west Nebraska. Springer says 6 inches was reported Friday morning in Garden County, 5 inches at the North Platte airport.
He called the spring blizzard "an exceptional event."
