Police say an officer in Virginia has been seriously injured in an attack while responding to a report of a disorderly person.
Alexandria Deputy Police Chief Shahram Fard said at a news conference Wednesday that the officer was the first on the scene in the city's Old Town area. Fard says a man there assaulted the officer and she feared for her life, so she fired a shot at the suspect but he wasn't hit. Other officers arrived and took the suspect into custody.
Fard says the 34-year-old officer is being treated for serious injuries.
Police identified the suspect in a statement later Wednesday as 51-year-old Clyde Eugene Reynolds of no fixed address. Police say he's charged with malicious wounding of a police officer.
