A New York defense lawyer is asking the public not to rush to judgment in the case of a young mother accused of killing her 5-year-old son by poisoning him with salt.
He says the woman, Lacey Spears of Scottsville, Kentucky, is looking forward to fighting the charges.
Attorney Stephen Riebling commented Wednesday after a brief court session in which he was granted an extra month to file motions.
The 26-year-old Spears was not in court. She pleaded not guilty last month to charges of murder and manslaughter in the death of Garnett-Paul Spears.
The boy died in January at the Westchester Medical Center outside New York City when his sodium levels rose to a dangerous level. Prosecutors said doctors believed Spears was harming him.
Spears had long documented her son's ailments on social media.
