A father of two high school students who survived February's school massacre in Parkland, Fla., was fatally shot this week by a robber, authorities said.
On Friday, a 19-year-old man surrendered to police in connection with the death, Miami's FOX 7 reported. Police identifed the suspect as Tyrone Fields Jr. and said he faces one count of murder and an armed robbery charge, the report said.
The victim, Ayub Ali, 61, was stocking shelves in his North Lauderdale convenience store when the suspect walked in, video footage released by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office shows.
The gunman appeared to linger in the aisles before approaching Ali behind the store's front counter.
Ali opened the register and the gunman appeared to pocket some cash before leaving the store. According to police, the gunman returned to the store a short while later and shot Ali.
Ali was taken to a nearby medical center and pronounced dead, the Miami Herald reported. The gunman’s motive for returning to the convenience store was not immediately known.
The sheriff's office released the surveillance footage Thursday.
Ali was an immigrant from Bangladesh who had been in the United States for 20 years. A family spokesman said he worked long hours to save up enough money to buy the convenience store.
“He was a very, very nice person,” a friend of Ali’s told FOX 7. “He was very friendly with the customers. Everybody likes him in the community.”
Ali leaves behind a wife and four children. Two of Ali’s four children are students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., where a lone gunman massacred 17 people in February. Ali's children were not among those killed.
