The American Civil Liberties Union of Hawaii says a deaf Japanese tourist was illegally denied a sign-language interpreter while she was detained and interrogated at Honolulu International Airport.
The ACLU said Thursday it filed a discrimination complaint with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
The woman landed in Honolulu on Jan. 31 to visit her boyfriend. The complaint says U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials took her into an office to question her about her past as an international student in the United States.
The complaint says she requested an American Sign Language interpreter but didn't receive one.
Customs and Border Protection says the agency received the complaint and will address the accusations once an investigation is completed.
According to the complaint, the woman was handcuffed and taken to a detention center.
