A tense standoff with a California murder suspect barricaded in a car finally ended Friday afternoon after 19 hours.

The suspect was holed up in a Mercedes sedan in Martinez, and police said they were trying to resolve the situation “with no more loss of life,” Fox station KTVU reported. The standoff began about 7 p.m. Thursday.

The suspect could be seen pointing a gun at his head as he spoke to negotiators with the Contra Costa County SWAT team, according to reports.

"Officers are currently negotiating with him for a peaceful surrender," the Walnut Creek Police Department said on Facebook around midnight on Friday.

By early Friday morning the suspect had relinquished his firearm to the SWAT team's remote-controlled robot, NBC San Francisco reported.

Walnut Creek police had been searching for the man all afternoon and evening Thursday.

Police said he shot and killed a woman near a wildlife preserve in Walnut Creek about 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

She was shot at least once. Officer tried to save her but she died at the scene, KTVU reported.
