A U.S. Navy SEAL raped an unconscious woman in Virginia, kept images of child porn involving sex with animals on his phone and may have filmed his own sexual assault of a sleeping girl, authorities alleged in recently unsealed federal charges.
SEAL Team 1 Petty Officer 1st Class Gregory Kyle Seerden, 31, was arrested in San Diego on April 3 on child pornography and child sex assault charges that stem from an investigation into a rape in Virginia, The LA Times reported.
An unidentified Virginia woman said Seerden raped her after she blacked out in his hotel room at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek–Fort Story. The woman quickly reported her account to authorities, and Naval Criminal Investigative Service agents probing the charge allegedly found nearly 80 images of child pornography on Seerden’s phone, The Virginia Pilot reported.
Investigators also discovered videos shot earlier in January depicting an unidentified person assaulting a sleeping girl and masturbating near her. Officials examining the footage suspect Seerden may be the unidentified person due to similarities in clothing worn by the man in the video and clothes worn by Seerden in pictures shot earlier in the evening. Seerden is also clearly pictured in other photos with the victim, according to The Pilot.
Seerden is stationed in San Diego but was on temporary assignment in Virginia when the Jan. 27 incident allegedly occurred. Virginia is seeking Seerden’s extradition.
Charges were initially filed against Seerden on March 31, but were only unsealed Wednesday, The Pilot reported.
Asked if Seerden’s trident insignia and SEAL status had been revoked, a Naval Special Warfare Group One spokesperson declined to comment to The LA Times.
“NSW is cooperating with the investigative authorities,” Lt. Zachary Keating said.
