Harry Belafonte, "Wolf Hall" author Hilary Mantel and columnist-speechwriter Peggy Noonan were among five honorees at the New York Public Library's annual gala for its "Library Lions."

"Brooklyn" novelist Colm Toibin and author-translator Javier Marias were the other "exceptional men and women" celebrated Monday night during a dinner ceremony at the historic reading room of the library's Fifth Avenue branch. Other attendees included Tom Wolfe, Joyce Carol Oates, Salman Rushdie and Henry Louis Gates.

Previous recipients range from Edward Albee and Elie Wiesel to Oprah Winfrey and Stephen Sondheim.
