Police say an east Georgia police officer fatally shot a man in a car chase that ended in western Alabama.

Columbus Police Chief Ricky Boren tells multiple news outlets that the chase started around 4 a.m. Sunday in Columbus, Georgia, and ended in Phenix City, Alabama, where the shooting occurred.

Russell County District Attorney Kenneth Davis tells the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer that the officer believed the vehicle was stolen and was being used as a weapon.

Davis says the officer fatally shot the driver of the vehicle, which also carried another man and woman. The two suspects were injured and taken to Midtown Medical Center in Columbus.

The names of the suspects have not been released.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency and the State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting.
